Timing Belt Tensioner Service Video

The timing belt tensioner helps keep the timing belt tight. The belt must stay in the right position as the engine runs. If it gets loose, engine timing can be thrown off.

A bad timing belt tensioner can cause rattling, belt slip, poor engine timing, or major engine damage if the belt jumps out of place.

The tensioner may use a spring or hydraulic pressure. It presses on the timing belt while the belt moves around the camshaft and crankshaft. If the tensioner gets weak, the belt may skip a tooth.

Springfield cold starts can add stress to timing parts. Cold Ohio mornings and local driving around Urbana Road, US-40, and I-70 can make a weak tensioner noise easier to notice.

At Zima Automotive, our technicians conduct tensioner inspections each time timing belt service is neeeded. We also look at the belt, pulleys, water pump, and related parts. Since many of these parts sit in the same area, it may make sense to service them together.

Drivers from Urbana and Mechanicsburg may visit our Springfield shop when the timing belt interval is due, or an engine rattle starts. If you hear rattling or are near your timing belt interval, call Zima Automotive at (937) 342-3911.
